Children come to Fitzjohn's from widespread and varied backgrounds and the school prides itself on the unity and harmony which it fosters amongst the children. Fitzjohn's values the contribution which every child brings to the school community and it responds by providing a place of nurture and support in which they can flourish.
The school educates children from just before their fourth birthday
until they go to secondary school at the age of eleven. It has a staff of considerable experience who teach
one nursery unit opened in Autumn 2006, three infant classes which are accommodated in two
new buildings constructed in Autumn 2005 and four junior classes accommodated in the 1950s building. The seven classes with a maximum of thirty children each have a class teacher with whom they work for at least a year.
The Nursery accommodates 26 children. The classes are arranged as year groups, the year being from September to August. Our additional and part-time teachers work in the classrooms with the class teachers or in the hall
or the library that was opened in the Spring of 2006. In the summer good use is made of the playground and garden areas.
The small size of the school, maximum 234 pupils, means that over the years the staff get to know the children very well.
Our approach is based on an awareness of the diverse individual needs of all children. We aim to encourage the individual abilities of every child to the highest standard and to develop in children an appreciation of the talents found in others.
